There are a few details that may seem minor but have a big impact on how comfortable your cruise will be
When was the ship last renovated
This is one of the first questions I’d recommend asking
Even a high-category ship can end up feeling quite “worn out” if the cabins, plumbing, furniture, and common areas haven’t been updated in a long time
Whether the cabin windows open
A very important point that, for some reason, is rarely considered
On many cruise ships the windows are completely sealed, so it’s impossible to air out the cabin and you have to rely on the air conditioning all the time
For anyone who cares about fresh air, this can be a significant downside
Whether the cabin has a kettle
If you’re used to making your own tea or coffee in the morning or evening, be sure to check on this in advance

I’d pay attention not only to the cabin’s category but also to which deck it’s on and where it sits relative to the engines and technical areas
Cabins closer to the stern can be noisier and feel more vibration, especially while the ship is moving

This is where a significant part of your free time during the cruise is spent, so I always check how spacious it is, whether there’s a pool, enough loungers, shaded areas, and good spots for watching the Nile go by
